BMW 2800CS

Sunday, December 26, 2010

he BMW CS series was one of the automakers most successful models. A key part of BMW's startling sales success in the 1970s and 1980s was its introduction of a new engine family in the 1960s, with hemispherical combustion chambers, opposed valves in crossflow cylinder heads, and overhead-camshaft valvegear. The first of these appeared in late 1961 to power the make-or-break "New Generation" 1500 sedan. Since then, it's been built with both four and six cylinders in displacements from 1.5 to 3.4 liters, and remains an important building block at BMW today.

As this engine grew, the original "New Generation" sedan evolved through 1600, 1800, and 2000 derivatives. A new CS coupe variation arrived in 1965, combining the 2000 sedan's running gear, floorpan, and some inner panels with a handsome new pillarless body designed by BMW's Wilhelm Hofmeister and executed by Karmann of Osnabrück. Unfortunately, this 2000CS had but a 120-horsepower four and was thus somewhat underpowered, while its face was one only Frau Hofmeister could have loved.

But BMW is nothing if not persistent, and in late 1968 it corrected most every 2000CS flaw in a six-cylinder successor, the BMW 2800CS. To accommodate the longer engine, new sheetmetal was grafted onto the existing body ahead of the cowl, adding 2.9 inches in wheelbase but nearly five inches to overall length.

BMW 507

The BMW 507 was the first sports car from BMW that could compete with the Jaguars and Ferraris. Born in 1916 as an aircraft-engine manufacturer, Bavarian Motor Works had branched out into motorcycles by the late Twenties and was looking to expand into the auto business. It got the chance when the Dixi company in Eisenach proposed that BMW take it over, thus giving the Bavarian firm a license-built version of the British Austin Seven.

BMW soon developed cars of its own that moved far beyond that humble little rattletrap, building a reputation for superb engineering in the process. This naturally embraced sporting models, of which the most famous and successful were the six-cylinder Type 328 and 327 of the immediate prewar years, and later, the BMW 507.

But then came World War II, and BMW emerged as divided as defeated Germany itself. Some of its prewar facilities were irrevocably lost behind the Iron Curtain in the new state of East Germany, while those that remained in free West Germany had been devastated by Allied bombing. Rebuilding from this rubble was slow and painful, and it wasn't until 1951 that BMW was able to return to car production, though it did so with a new postwar design.

BMW Sports Cars

BMW sports cars are products of the same exacting engineering that created the world's top performance sedan. In this article, you will find profiles and pictures of some of the best of the breed.

Bayerische Motorenwerke, or Bavarian Motor Works, was established in 1916, producing first engines for aircraft and then for motorcycles. It moved into automobiles in the 1920s, assembling for the German market small British cars under license. BMW began to manufacture cars of its own design in the 1930s, and from the start, most had a sporting bent. The prewar highlight was the quick, pretty, and advanced-for-its-day 328 roadster.

BMW's recovery from World War II was labored as the company gambled and lost with big, expensive sedans before resorting in 1955 to the tiny, egg-shaped Isetta to stay solvent.

It was the sensational BMW 507 sports car of 1956 that reignited the company's high-performance personality. Though it didn't sell well, the vitality of the 507 inspired a series of good-handling two- and four-door cars that earned BMW credit for inventing the sports sedan.

Spiritual successor to the 507 was the BMW 2800CS of 1968. Discover how this shapely coupe and the variants that followed into the 1970s laid the groundwork for the BMW 6-Series of high-performance two-door models starting in 1976.

These cars led to the landmark BMW M1, a midengine supercar introduced for 1978. Breaking the supercar mold by being reliable and drivable as well as very fast, the M1 also inaugurated the famous M series of cars that represent the ultimate in BMW driving machines.

Hyundai i10 free with Sonata; new 800

whoa! Hyundai is taking the world by storm. Every corner of the world has something new happening with the i10.

In Belgium -

Hyundai’s exporter in Belgium is running an unbelievable offer – Buy a Hyundai Sonata 2.0 CRDi Executive and get a new Hyundai i10 free! OK you don’t get the Kappa engine, you still get the 1.1-liter engine which is a peppy motor.

The catch – You need to be among the first 75 to book this car to be eligible. So if you live in Hungary, you can’t afford to think too long!

In U.K -

Hyundai i10 is now among the top ten best selling cars in the UK ! No, Hyundai UK did not offer a Sonata free with the i10.

The massive booking is because of the incentives provided by the government on your new car, if you trade in your old and smokey one which isn’t doing any good to the environment or your fuel bills. The scrappage scheme is a great opportunity to exchange you old car at the best possible bargain, and the Hyundai i10 is among the most favorite cars with British buyers.

Hyundai sold 3,084 cars last month making it the ninth most popular car in July 2009.

The catch – Once the scrappage scheme is rolled back, the Hyundai i10 would not enjoy the same status.

At Hyundai’s doorway -

A new 800cc, three-cylinder turbocharged version of the Hyundai i10 will go on sale in the first half of next year. The new model derives its heart from the i10 Blue CNG concept shown at the Geneva show last year, which produces 90bhp and under 100g/km of Carbon dioxide.

Hyundai says this car runs on petrol, and not CNG which the concept used to emit just 65g/km and 97bhp.

Hyundai's lithium polymer hits the real world

Yesterday, Hyundai began selling its new Elantra hybrid, the first hybrid to use lithium polymer batteries, but only in South Korea. Nonetheless, the batteries powering these new hybrid cars could have a dramatic impact on the future of hybrids, and of Hyundai.

In terms of manufacturing, many experts believe that lithium polymer offers huge advantages compared to other lithium batteries, particularly when it comes to mass production. And today, cost-effective, reliable mass production is the key to the lithium game.

New Hyundai Genesis: First Hyundai to offer XM NavTraffic

XM NavTraffic, which is available in 80 major North American markets, will be made available as part of the Genesis' navigation system. Every 2009 Hyundai Genesis equipped with XM NavTraffic comes standard with a free 3-month subscription of the traffic service (XM Radio also comes with a 3-month trial subscription).

"While Genesis will compete for customers with cars like Chrysler 300 and Pontiac G8, our engineering benchmarks were Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M, and Lexus GS," said John Krafcik, VP product development and strategic planning at Hyundai Motor America.

Genesis is built on Hyundai's all-new, rear-wheel-drive architecture with three powertrains offered, including 3.3-liter and 3.8-liter V6 engines, and Hyundai's all-new 4.6-liter Tau V8. The Tau will produce an estimated 375 horsepower using premium fuel (368hp using regular unleaded) leading all competitors in specific output with 79.5 to 81.0 horsepower per liter.

Hyundai's new flagship vehicle will also be the most advanced Hyundai ever. From its 8-inch navigation display (which also sports a 30-gig harddrive), to its Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS), Smart Cruise Control, and its Lexicon state-of-the-art audio system featuring LOGIC 7® technology (which, by the way, is only available on the Rolls Royce Phantom in addition to the Genesis). The MSRP is unknown at this time, but I'll make a bet that it will be a big seller for the automaker.

A strong indication was given in this regard as the company held the global premiere of its new compact car ‘i10’ here on Wednesday in the presence of the superstar and brand ambassador, Shahrukh Khan. This car will be manufactured only in India and exported to over 70 countries. Significantly, this is the first car from Hyundai stable that made its international debut in India.

New Lexus SC

I used to detest Lexus' styling– if you want to call it that. The SC was just one of many derivative, disgusting designs. That all changed in 2005, when the beta "L-finesse" produced the magnificent second IS. The 2007 LS revealed that the IS was no accident. (Maserati Quattroporte aside, I consider the Lexus LS the world's best-looking mass-produced luxury We can now dare and dream that the third generation SC will bring us the rough-sporty side of the "L-finesse" philosophy. My rendering operates from the principle that the new convertible should ditch the LF-A concepts' over-dramatic air-intakes. And an an increased wheelbase is a must for the new SC; it needs to blow the 3-Series convertible out of the proverbial water. Design-wise, I'm thinking it will…

2010 Lexus RX350

I spent about 30 minutes in total sitting in the back of a new Lexus RX350 last night; here are my thoughts:

  • The (fold -down) center console in the backseat is the exact same one that can be found in the previous generation RX. Not a deal-breaker by any means, but thoughtlessly cheap nonetheless. I guess they figured no one would notice? I suppose if it works, why fix it…I think everything should/can be rethought…
  • The dimensions and overall size of the car feel almost identical to the previous generation. A good thing for people who liked the old one, a bad thing for those who wanted a step up in size and room.
  • The lighting in the car is very fresh and contemporary. Dials are bright white, switches are white as well, and ambient lighting is a clean white LED. The rear reading lights were particularly bright LEDs.
  • The auto-up-down windows have an interesting feature: they slow down when they are just at the top of their track. In other words, when the window is down and one activates the auto-up feature, the window glides up at normal speed but slows considerably just before it reaches the top, as if to dampen the sound (or physical effect) of the glass making contact with the window frame. Certainly not something you see everyday…
  • Rear passenger side airbags are now standard, which is very unlike a premium brand. Lately, rear side airbags are always a $300-400 option.
  • The leather was particularly comfortable because it was perforated. You’d think that a bunch of tiny holes would make only a marginal difference. And yet, they keep things very cool, even in the backseat where there aren’t any active cooling fans beneath them.

Lexus GS-F Artist’s Impression

The first in the new Lexus F brand was the Lexus IS-F that many expected to be a competitor to the BMW M3, but the end results was quite different. Even though blessed with hardcore, perhaps even borderlining on ricey looks, what the car was made of was suited more to a fast luxury cruiser instead of a track monster.

The next car in the Lexus F line-up will be the Lexus GS-F (artist’s impression above by Theophilus Chin), supposed to be aimed square at the BMW M5. The GS-F will most likely be powered by the V10 that’s supposed to be slotted into the Lexus LF-H supercar, making over 500 horsepower.

Since Lexus also seems to love one-upping it’s competitors on numbers, perhaps a tweaked up and modernized version of the 1GZ-FE (1GZ-DE?) will be offered. The 1GZ-FE was a 5.0 liter V12 offered in Toyota luxury cars like the Toyota Century.

While power figures on paper might defeat the M5, but that’s not all it takes to win the hearts of enthusiasts.

A Preview of the New Lexus LX 570

It’s true that this new Lexus Land Cruiser is a rather significant upgrade of the outgoing model — the redesigned exterior is considerably more modern, and the new engine does help somewhat with gas mileage — but it’s a wonder that this update didn’t include the LS 600h’s hybrid engine, or that the vehicle wasn’t trimmed down to make it a touch lighter on its feet.

Lexus US Vice President/General Manager Bob Carter stated during the New York Auto Show that “LX customers have traditionally been our most affluent—professionals with families who add the LX to their stable of vehicles for its luxurious utility, versatility and capability.” Wouldn’t it stand to reason that these self-same people would be willing to pony up the extra money for a more eco-friendly version?
